Mi Fu (1051–1107) was a calligrapher, painter, and art theorist of the Northern Song Dynasty. His ancestral home was Taiyuan, though he later settled in Xiangyang. Gifted with extraordinary talent and an eccentric personality, he was known for his obsession with cleanliness. He admired Tang Dynasty attire and collected unusual stones. He was widely known by the nickname “Mi Dian”.

Mi Fu developed a distinctive personal style in both painting and calligraphy. He excelled at painting withered trees, bamboo, and rocks, often bringing fresh ideas to these subjects. He also painted landscapes, and pioneered a style known as “ink play of cloudy mountains”, characterized by soft mists and natural spontaneity.

A skilled poet and master calligrapher, Mi Fu was highly proficient in seal script, clerical script, regular script, running script, and cursive script. He was particularly renowned for his ability to copy ancient calligraphy so precisely it was nearly indistinguishable from the original. He is celebrated as one of the “Four Great Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty.”

He held several official positions, including Proofreader of Books, Art and Calligraphy Professor, and Assistant Director in the Ministry of Rites.
