Su Shi (January 8, 1037 – August 24, 1101), courtesy names Zizhan and Hezhong, and art names Tieguan Daoren and Dongpo Jushi, is commonly known as Su Dongpo or Su Xian. He was of Han ethnicity, born in Meishan, Meizhou (modern-day Meishan City, Sichuan Province), with ancestral roots in Luancheng, Hebei Province. Su Shi was a renowned writer, calligrapher, painter, and an accomplished historical figure in hydraulic engineering during the Northern Song Dynasty.
As a leading literary figure of the mid-Northern Song period, Su Shi made remarkable contributions in poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting. His prose is bold and unrestrained; his poetry, known for its broad themes and fresh, vigorous style, often uses vivid metaphors and exaggeration, earning him recognition alongside Huang Tingjian as “Su and Huang.”
In the realm of ci poetry, he pioneered the bold and unrestrained school, and with Xin Qiji, he is known as one of its greatest exponents — the two are referred to as “Su and Xin.” His essays are voluminous and unrestrained in style; together with Ouyang Xiu, he is praised as “Ou and Su.” He is also recognized as one of the “Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song.”
Su Shi was an outstanding calligrapher, one of the “Four Great Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty.” He was also a master of literati painting, especially skilled in painting ink bamboo, strange rocks, and withered trees. Along with Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, and Ouyang Xiu, he is regarded as one of the “Four Great Masters of Chinese Prose through the Ages.”
