黃自元（1837-1916年），字善長，號敬與，清末湖南安化人，同治七年（公元1868年）進士，並點為榜眼，賜奉政大夫，供職翰林院，後又任各省鄉試考官。官至記名御史，翰林檢修，曾任武英殿總纂，翰林院編修，以及陝西道監察御史和甘肅寧夏知府。五十歲後離職回籍，講學之間並以書法自娛。黃自元習字始學顏真卿，後法柳公權、歐陽詢、邵瑛，並博取眾長，而自成家法。

Huang Ziyuan (1837–1916), courtesy name Shanzhang, art name Jingyu, was a native of Anhua, Hunan Province, in the late Qing Dynasty. In the 7th year of the Tongzhi reign (1868), he achieved the jinshi degree and was ranked second in the imperial examination (known as bangyan). He was granted the title Senior Official of the Court (Fengzheng Dafu) and served in the Hanlin Academy. He later held various official positions, including provincial examination examiner, imperial censor (Jiming Yushi), Hanlin Academy revising official (Jianxiu), chief editor of the Wuying Palace, and governor of Gansu’s Ningxia region.

After the age of fifty, he retired from official life and returned to his hometown, where he taught and practiced calligraphy for pleasure.

Huang Ziyuan began by studying the calligraphy of Yan Zhenqing, and later followed the styles of Liu Gongquan, Ouyang Xun, and Shao Ying, ultimately absorbing the strengths of various masters and developing a distinctive personal style.
