黃庭堅(1045.8.9-1105.5.24),字魯直,號山谷道人,晚號涪翁,洪州分寧(今江西省九江市修水縣)人,北宋著名文學家、書法家,為盛極一時的江西詩派開山之祖,與杜甫、陳師道和陳與義素有“一祖三宗”(黃庭堅為其中一宗)之稱。與張耒、晁補之、秦觀都遊學於蘇軾門下,合稱為“蘇門四學士”。生前與蘇軾齊名,世稱“蘇黃”。著有《山谷詞》,且黃庭堅書法亦能獨樹一格,為“宋四家”之一。

Huang Tingjian (August 9, 1045 – May 24, 1105), courtesy name Luzhi, art name Daoist of Shangu, and later Old Man of Fu, was a native of Funning, Hongzhou (present-day Xiushui County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province). He was a renowned writer and calligrapher of the Northern Song Dynasty, and the founding figure of the influential Jiangxi Poetry School. Along with Du Fu, Chen Shidao, and Chen Yuyi, he was part of the group known as “One Founder and Three Masters” (with Huang being one of the three masters).

He studied under Su Shi, along with Zhang Lei, Chao Buzhi, and Qin Guan, and together they were known as the Four Scholars of the Su School. During his lifetime, he was held in the same regard as Su Shi, and the two were often referred to collectively as “Su and Huang”.

He authored Shangu Ci (Lyrics of Shangu), and his distinctive calligraphy style earned him a place among the “Four Great Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty.”
