Zhao Zhiqian (1829–1894) was a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. His original courtesy name was Yifu, and his art name was Lengjun; later, he changed his courtesy name to Huishu, and also used the art names Tiesan, Hanliao, Beian, Wumen, and Meian. His residences were called “Er Jin Die Tang” and “Ku Jian Shi.” He served as county magistrate of Poyang and Fengxin in Jiangxi Province.
Zhao was skilled in poetry and prose, and excelled in calligraphy. He initially studied the style of Yan Zhenqing, with his seal and clerical scripts influenced by Deng Shiru. Later, he developed his own unique style, which was strong, bold, and distinct from the common trends of his time. He was also an accomplished painter, especially of flowers, drawing inspiration from Shi Tao but adding his own variations, becoming a pioneer of late Qing expressive flower painting.
In seal carving, he initially learned the Zhejiang school style, later following the seals of the Qin and Han dynasties, and also incorporated influences from Song, Yuan, and Anhui schools. He absorbed inscriptions from Qin steles, Han mirrors, coinage, and epitaphs into his seals, breaking old conventions and producing work that was both vigorous and elegant.
Zhao Zhiqian gained national fame in his youth for his extraordinary talent. His mastery of calligraphy was comprehensive, blending brush techniques from regular, cursive, clerical, and seal scripts into an integrated and complementary style.
He once said, “Independence is precious; the world is vast, many opinions abound, but independence is hard to seek and difficult to attain.”
Throughout his life, Zhao Zhiqian dedicated himself tirelessly to poetry, calligraphy, painting, and artistic expression, ultimately becoming a master of his generation.
